treadmill induced nausea?
Does anyone else get nauseous while running on a treadmill? Ever since I got my precious treadmill in my house I’ve noticed that it makes me a little seasick when I’m running on it. It’s strange because this has never happened to me before even though this summer I logged a LOT of my miles on a ‘mill.
In fact, the time that I threw up after my workout it was when I did half on the treadmill and half on the roads. Could it be a cause and effect relationship?
What got me thinking about this was last night. I had 6 recovery miles to run. While I usually like to do my mileage all at once, I don’t feel too guilty when I split up recovery miles. KT wanted to run a bit in the afternoon so we did an easy three miles and everything felt great. Then I had to go to Jazzercise, make dinner, and do some chores before I got to finish up my last three miles. By then it was dark and Glee was on, so I opted to run the three miles on my treadmill.
My recovery pace is 10 min miles, so by no means was I pushing myself. But still I felt sick to my stomach after just a mile. I was able to finish, but felt dizzy and sick for the rest of the evening.
I’m not sure how to deal with this or if it really is from my treadmill…I guess I’ll just stick to the great outdoors for now…

Ooohhh, I hope it’s not the treadmill…
I certainly hope its not the treadmill
It could be: motion sickness often comes when your eyes and your body are giving you inconsistent signals about your movement through space. That’s why I can’t read in a car. If it’s not too bad, you might be able to sync it up eventually with practice. In other words, keep doing it, and it’ll eventually be less of a problem. It depends on how bad it is to begin with, and also keep a close watch on is it getting better or worse. If it’s getting worse, give it up! Is the room smaller than the room your parents’ treadmill was in? This is just a theory; it could be something else entirely.
There’s also something about peripheral vision playing a role. Do you watch TV or read while treading? Try looking around more often.
Gina when was the last time you went to a Dr for a check up and get your blood work done. did you check your heart rate while you were feeling sick. what was your blood pressure? I did not catch if this was the first time you felt sick while running on a mill. I know that while you were here you always had a fan on you. you are running in your basement where you do laundry and there may be a need for some fresh air while you run. these are a few things that ran through my mind
LIY dad
I had this happen regularly when I had a gym membership and ran on treadmills there. Part of the reason I no longer run on treadmills. Do you ever get motion sickness otherwise? I also get sick swimming in choppy water, occasional carsickness, etc.
ummmm i just wrote the most amazing comment ever and it didnt show up! stupid blog!
i like when your fam responds it’s so cute!
yes I do sometimes get dizzy on the mill, but it seems completely random.
Jeaners! What brand gels do you use? (I asked Greg last night and he was wondering why I was asking about your hair products…HAHA).
And this might be an obscure question, but do you have a system to handle the amount of laundry that running daily generates? My idea was to have at least one set of clothes for every day I run, 5-6 days worth, and just wash them all at the same time once a week. But if there’s a better system you’ve figured out…let me know!
holy smokes, as if I didn’t have enough reasons to dislike treadmills (I just can’t run on them . . . can do a 50 miler but 3 miles on treadmill is dreadful). I’ve never heard of that. Do you get motion sickness in a car? Wondering if you need to have a fixed point to stare at, sort of like focusing on the horizon while on a boat. Hope you figure out a way to manage/overcome that problem.
I get nauseous thinking about having to run more than 30 minutes on a treadmill!
