insane in the brain
After some pretty strong encouragement (read: pressure) from my brother I have decided to give the Insanity dvd’s a run for their money. I’m still in my “off season” and while I will continue to run and slowly build the mileage back up, I wanted to add in another cross training element–you know, for kicks and giggles. He’s been through the P90x serious and Insanity both and recommended the later as a better supplement to my running.
Now, I am just 4 days into the series, so I can’t yet speak to any long term benefits or improvements. What I can tell you is that I have never felt my core this sore after a cardio workout. Usually I only get this kind of deep-down muscle fatigue after an intense ab-centric workout. I can’t believe how tender my lower abs have been all week. True, I did run 4 miles on the same day that I did the “fit test” but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the cause of my sore-core. Wowza.
From what I can tell so far (remember, only 4 days in) the program is all about cardio intervals incorporating plyometrics (jumping drills), resistance training, and strength building. I cannot believe how quickly the people on the video move. It makes me look like I am working out neck-deep in a pool of wet cement. Seriously. I mean, I understand that in marathon training we develop our “slow twitch” muscles as opposed to the “fast twitch” but sheesh. I look like an uncoordinated toddler and I feel like a new born giraffe learning to walk for the first time. Bottom line: it ain’t pretty.
I’ll be sure to check back in with results the next time I do my fit test in two weeks. The hope/goal is that every two weeks you repeat the same fit test from day one and you see marked improvement over time. Let’s get Insane!

I have heard great things about these DVDs…good luck! Thanks for the calf ideas
Ive been meaning to try insanity. I have p90x sitting here starring at me waiting to be tried but i’m just not motivated. maybe after sunday gets here, my motivation will return!
I have heard lots of good things about insanity – enjoy!
Seriously, we really are twins. I loved reading through your comments today! You made my day and made me feel so much better about some of my weird habits. I have done Insanity too! It is crazy hard but I love how convenient it is just to do it in your own house! I didn’t do it long enough to give it a good review so I am way excited to hear what you have to think. I am a ‘slow twitch’ muscle girl too so it was extra hard. I wish you lived close, I would love to run with my twin!!
I have heard this program was great. Can’t wait to hear what you think as you get further into the program!
I did a couple of months of Insanity. I really enjoyed it! I’m interested to hear what you think after more time with it!
I’m really interested to see how you like this over the long-term! I’ve heard great things about Insanity, which has made me want to try it. I’ve done P90x (though not as a program — just done the DVDs) and that’s really tough!! But I don’t really love all the lifting that’s part of it. I can see how Insanity would be a better complement to running.
Is this something you’ll be doing every day? And do you feel like it takes away time from running? Or does that not matter since you’re in the “off-season?”
Insanity! Yeah, they do move really fast on that DVD, don’t they? It’s a little unnerving. I console myself with the thought that maybe the cameramen just film the people that aren’t resting
I just started my second time through Insanity (after taking about a 4-month break) and although I have enough coordination, I realize what I need are more lungs and heart! I admire you for running and doing this program. I did that a little in the summer… it wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t even human.
