jazzerversary
Five years ago, today, I became a Jazzercise instructor. Literally my favorite job ever! Even though I no longer teach classes, I still love going and the Jazzer-community is nothing short of amazing! Since I rave about Jazzercise so much on here and I get a LOT of questions about what its like I figured now would be the best time to share with everyone why I’m so obsessed with Jazzercise.
What to expect at a Jazzercise class:
- When you first get there, a class manager or the instructor will welcome you and make sure you get oriented. I’ve visited classes EVERYWHERE that I travel from California to Chicago, Michigan to Vermont. They are always so open and friendly.
- The opening song/routine will be some nice easy movements to get your muscles warm and then you spend a few minutes stretching.
- The cardio section lasts between 35-40 minutes. Songs are selected to get your heart rate up quickly, sustain it, and then slowly bring it back down.
- The last cardio routine is always my favorite. Its usually a little more funky and dance-like. Recently there has been a lot of music from the Glee cast which is super fun!
- For the last 15-20 minutes of class we do stretching and strength training. We use weights, resistance bands, exercise balls and mats. The ab workouts are usually my favorite and can REALLY burn!
- The last routine always includes some more light stretching to round out the perfect 60 minute workout.
Some general reasons why Jazzercise is my favorite form of exercise:
- Always new fresh music. I actually find most of my running music from Jazzercise class. They always have current upbeat song that motivate me to work hard.
- A scheduled start and stop time. I’ve found that just “going to the gym” doesn’t work for me because I could go “whenever” which means that I put it off and end up short changing my workout. So, just the fact that it starts at 6:00 pm gets me out the door.
- Informed, quality instructors. Jazzercise instructors come in all varieties, but they all love what they do and it shows. Classes are always fun, and informative.
- I don’t have to plan out what I’m going to do. When I go to class I know that I will get a full cardio workout plus resistance training with all of my major muscle groups: arms, chest, back, legs, glutes, abs.
- It has the BEST of everything! I have exercise ADD and I love to try out new forms of crosstraining, but I don’t want to pay for yoga, pilates, kickboxing, latin dance, etc. Jazzercise incorporates the best of all these different genres and puts it together for me. I love that during one class I’ll be kicking and punching during one song, finding my “cha cha” hips the next, and even doing pilates “100′s” before class is done.
- Accountability. I know that if I miss a day or two people will notice. When I was gone for two weeks at Christmas time I got a postcard, emails, and facebook messages from the instructor and others in the class making sure everything was ok and telling me that they missed me. It’s so great to know that people notice my presence and miss me when I’m gone.
And finally, why I think that Jazzercise is the BEST crosstraining for me, a runner:
- Strengthens the opposing muscles. In running the motion goes from the back of the foot rolling through to the toe where you push off. In Jazzercise, and most other aerobics, the impact is reversed. You land on your foot rolling “toe-ball-heel.” I have found this to be an awesome way to have some impact in my workouts, but still give my running muscles a break.
- Core strength. Throughout the entire 60 minute workout you are strengthening your core. With the twisting, lifting, and hopping the core is engaged as it keeps you stabilized. When I first started going to Jazzercise regularly I noticed a huge change in my running posture. I was running “tall” and using my core strength to have support my spine. This helped me not fatigue as quickly.
- Hip strength. Every time I see articles in Runner’s World or other places about how to stay injury free and recover from a knee injury they address the importance of hip strength and flexibility. What I LOVE is that most of the suggested exercises for strengthening the hip are ones that I already do in Jazzercise, just by going to class. We routinely work both the inner and outer thigh and often the moves are ones that engage the hip flexors which helps me power up those hills that you all know I LOVE!
- Stretching. Although I used to be a gymnast, and I know the important role that stretching plays in the life of an athlete…I don’t always make the time to stretch. When I go to class I know that I will get some light stretching at the beginning, and entire routine of stretching after the cardio, and some more light stretching right before I leave. I love that stretching is a given when I go to Jazzercise.
So, if you’re interested in checking out a class, here’s a link to find a class near you. Next Monday, January 24, is the one day sale nationwide. If you are looking for the perfect time to attend a class for free and get some major discounts that would be the perfect time to check it out!
**I am not an employee of Jazzercise Inc, and did not receive any benefits from writing this post. I just REALLY love their workout!!!**

Judy will be soooo proud!
YOU ARE ADORABLE!!! I wish you still taught and I would fly out to your class:) I WANT TO TRY THIS CLASS SO BAD!!! I am now going to be going to research where the classes are! LOVE IT! Sounds hard core and I need someone to push me with core work! Love ya girl!
i didn’t know that jazzercise existed anymore! will have to try if i can find a studio.
Yay for certification! Maybe I gotta see what it’s all about…
That sounds like a great workout and tons of fun. I’ve heard of Jazzercise but never really looked into it.
As usual for where we live, I clicked on the link and there are no
classes within 25 miles. Geesh! We have nothing in Utica! So frustrating. Maybe I’ll look into a DVD. I need to introduce my
muscles to something new.
I don’t know anything about jazzercise, but you make it sound so fun!
Ah, I don’t think I realized you were an instructor!! Awesome! So, you can definitely give a review of the class. This is by far your fav form of working out??
I have never tried a class, but would totally do it if you were teachign again!
I know, its a great workout. Wish we could all take your class together. How fun would that be. Thanks for the link!
Wow, Jazzercise instructors all over the world say THANK YOU for posting your love of Jazzercise. And, with that kind of passion, time to get back to teaching! As a corporate employee and a 29 year franchisee I thank you for sharing your thoughts in such a warm, friendly and compassionate way. And, I hope that the people you reach will try a Jazzercise class–it really is am amazing workout on so many levels. THANK YOU for sharing your thoughts!
I’ve looked into these before but could never make myself go. It looked somewhat expensive (I was afraid I’d get roped into buying) and am not real good at classes, but I will say it looks fun!
I took Jazzercise a long time ago with a group of friends and had a blast
It really is a great workout!
It sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve never tried it. I am planning to check out some classes at my gym sometime soon. I miss being there!
I’m with Carin, I didn’t know it existed anymore…and there’s a class 1.9 miles from my house, not bad!
I never realized that jazzercise used weights! Thanks for weighing in today with your blog comment.
Your XT/ST will really pay off
Have a great run this weekend and a great weekend too!
Happy Jazzeranniversary! Do you have to have coordination? If so, I’m out!
Hey! I tagged you in a post. It’s a fun one!!
Erika and i have been wanting to try Jazzercise!
thanks for this post! i always thought of jazzercise as some outdated “mom’s fitness class”. I always picture leg warmers. thanks for he correction!
Ah…..No.
my neighbor has a big ol’ jazzercise sticker on her rear windshield!! i should follow her one day when she heads out in her workout clothes!
cardio classes totally work you out different than running alone! my gym used to have a bodyjam class and it was hiphop routines…i loved it!
I have to admit this title made me laugh a little. I don’t know why, but it just sounds funny when you say it out loud.
Annnnyway…I never really thought much about jazzercise until I started reading your blog. When I would picture it before, I’d just think of ladies decked out in their 80′s stile spandex leotards and ponytails. Clearly I had the wrong impression. Your description of it really has me convinced! I love dancing (although am not the best at it) and really want to start incorporating more cross training that will make me a stronger runner. I need to find a class!
What a great enthusiastic and sincere description of Jazzercise.
I’ve been teaching Jazzercise for over ten year and I feel that way, still.
I am so glad you so eloquently described all that Jazzercise is and can be for anyone!
You should re-certify! We need more instructors like you!
Thanks for this great testimony!
I am an instructor that stopped teaching and can’t wait to get back at it. I have tried kickboxing, regular classes at the gym, zumba, treadmill. Nothing gives me goosebumps and smiles like Jazzercise. I have seen many people in the years I was teaching accomplish more in their life than they ever though. It’s 15 days till my first class back to teaching. I applaud everyone at Jazzercise for keeping it fresh new fun and definately challenging!
Love Jazzercise…I go everyday ….It keeps me thin and fit….I have ran …..don’t anymore…but participated in all types of activities but this is the only one I have stuck to for 10 years…love love it…I challenge you to find a class near you…It is not Only your Mom or Grandmothers workout…It kicks BUTT…
So, I clicked on the link and the nearest place is 2 hours away! Seriously, I live in the BOONDOCKS! It really does look like so much fun!!
I am so behind and I just read your last post! Wow, nasty long run! Gotta love that winter wind! Hope your 20 miles was warmer this week! Amazing sometimes that no one makes us or pays us to endure this nastiness!! (Well, actually I’m not since I’ve been on the mill this week.) I love the long runs too, especially really early in the morning in the summer when it’s just me and the crickets. No wind, no snow, no ice, and no frozen appendages!!!
Hope you’re having a great weekend:)
Reading your story makes me so excited! I’m going to become an instructor in April and now I can’t wait! Our jazzercise instructor ALWAYS makes our class tons of fun and keeps us going without us realizing all the work we are really doing. Thank you for your story…I shared it on my facebook wall for others to enjoy!
Love your blog, I stumbled acrossed it. I teach Jazzercise in Michigan, have been teaching just over 4 years and love it! I love that you no longer teach but still love jazz, also tempted to rip off jazzerversary (very creative
SO, just a couple things: I’ve gone to Jazzercise for 5 yrs now. Never once have I seen shiny tights, leg warmers or leotards. I’m almost terminally uncoordinated but never once has anyone laughed or pointed. I keep going (5:45AM) because it reduces stress, improves my posture, and it just is a fun way to work out. There is a wide variety of music, pop (Christina), standards (Buble’), a little country (Brand New Girlfriend). Also, lots of different moves, I haven’t mastered the downward dog, at least yet, but still hold out some hope. Maybe the most motivation is the accountability when I go consistently ~ when I’m not there Maryellen, Ann, Susie will notice. I am VERY lucky that I live in Kansas City where there are several centers and schedules. Sorry that’s not the case everywhere
I just became certified last week, but have been a student since 1983! Jazzercise does it for me, too! I have an incredible mentoring instructor who has just bent over backwards to get me ready and on the right track. I LOVE IT!!!!
I just wanted to say that I just found your blog and am SO excited that you are a runner AND a Jazzercise enthusiast. I am certified Jazzercise instructor and also a runner (1 full marathon and 6 half marathons over the past 5 years). I feel like most runners and triathletes won’t try classes like Jazzercise because they think it won’t be a good workout, but it really really is a great workout. Teaching Jazzercise has made my running so much stronger. I’ve also taught other group fitness classes (Turbokick, yoga, spinning, etc.) and nothing makes me feel like I do after I teach or take a Jazzercise class. I’m just so happy to know that there are other runners out there that also understand the benefits of a fun aerobics class like Jazzercise. Happy running!
