20 miler: first of 4

Yesterday, at daybreak, the temperature was -11.  Degrees.  The running club’s 8am group run had already been canceled so I knew that I didn’t have to be quick to abandon the warmth of my covers.  In fact, I managed to stay in bed long enough for this to happen:

That’s right, Mr. Dawn braved the sub zero temps to go to the store and get all the fixin’s for a delicious pancake breakfast, because I basically keep no food in the house.  And, yes, I put down a towel because I spill on myself like a toddler.

I then stayed in bed reading blogs, checking facebook, and watching the temperature with great anticipation.

Yes, that is a “feels like -4.”  Yes, this was at 10am.  Yes, I was still in bed.  Oh, and yes, I have the Boston Marathon logo as my desktop background.  I’m that obsessed.

By noon it had warmed up to an agreeable 13 degrees and my new running partner had showed up right on time.  The director of the running club had emailed everyone that the group run had been canceled, and I wrote her back to see if she would be interested in meeting up later in the day.  I was thrilled when she said that she’d do 10 out of my 20 miles with me at noon!

The best part about new running friends is that there is SO much to talk about.  She told me about her first marathon, the Toronto Marathon.  It was actually on the same day as the Grand Rapids Marathon so it turns out that we were running at the exact same time!  She’s a super star track athlete who just recently started doing endurance events.  Then we talked about family and friends, work and school, and all of a sudden the we were back at my house.  The 10 miles just flew by.  It was sunny and there was hardly any wind.  A perfect day for winter running.

I did another two miles solo around the neighborhood, but then it was time to watch some football with Mr. Dawn.  Now…he grew up near Chicago.  He’s been a Bears fan his entire life.  He actually bleeds blue and orange.  I am a Kansas City Chiefs fan, but I have started to enjoy watching the Bears play as well.

So this was my view for the last 8 miles:

Its hard to tell, but that is the game.  And my computer is set up on a tv tray because I may or may not have also been catching up on some reality tv…you know…during the commercials. I have two towels there…because when one fills up with my sweat I need another one.

The last three miles were pretty tough.  It might have just been because the game was going no where fast…or because I was running on a treadmill, either way my mind was not into it and I really had to just will myself onward.

Once I was done, I headed to the store to get my 20 lb. bag of ice for the ALL IMPORTANT ice bath.  I watched a Criminal Minds episode to keep my mind of the numbing cold.  Then I spent the rest of the evening refueling: two smoothies, pasta, pomegranate juice and some tea.

I’m really surprised with how great my legs feel this morning.  No real soreness or pain.  I’ve been nervous about these longer miles because I’m no longer doing any mid week double digit runs.  With  my last plan I’d always at least be running 10-12 miles sometime during the week.  I was afraid that without that the long runs were going to feel that much more challenging.  But both mentally and physically I feel like I was ready to tackle this first 20 miler.  I love that I already have one 20 miler done and I get to do three more!  Nothing builds my confidence like running 20+ miles.

Don’t forget, today is the one day sale for JazzerciseFind a class and then tell me how much you love it :)

that’s a good idea, to break it up between treadmill and outdoors. the one time i did a 20-miler on a treadmill i was PRETTY PRETTY bored.

and yes, you SHOULD get a dog for your birthday! i think everyone should have one :)

  • Erin F says:

You are a badass! First off, you ran 20 miles despite the insane cold (a woman’s gotta do, what a woman’s gotta do!) but secondly, you’re planning on running FOUR 20 milers?! I’ll be really excited if I can hit 1 with no knee troubles… sigh… ok, I’ll admit, I’m a wee bit jealous but super proud of you :) I can’t wait to meet up with you in Boston!!

  • dawn says:

nice job lady! i think it’s nice to be able to break up a long run like that…and i love pom juice. one down, sweet.

  • Breakfast in bed is THE BEST!! I love the boston marathon logo on the screen…we are obsessed:) GREAT RUN!! I love breaking it up to keep it from getting boring! I don’t know how you ran in that weather. LOVE reality shows. Two towels…brilliant. Have an amazing day and you ROCKED that run!!

  • katie says:

it’s so awesome that you are feeling so good today – great job getting your run in! it was more like 19 here but i still whined and complained about getting it done.

  • BookWormRuns says:

    Woo-hoo!! 1st 20 miler down…nice!! :)

  • I’ve had to break up 20-milers before, and hey… any way you can get ‘er done is great!

  • man, I feel sorry you ran while watching that game. We are bears fans too, and there is no way I would have been motivated while watching that. I ended up falling asleep at halftime and missed most of the third quarter LOL.

Awesome for the 20 miler though!

  • LindseyAnn says:

Nice work!! I love that you were watching the game while you finished your run–that’s totally something I would do, too! I hope your husband is taking the loss OK. (Whereas my fiance is on the other side of things–he grew up in central Wisconsin, so he’s a big Green Bay fan. He was pretty excited last night.)
What year did you run Grand Rapids? My sister ran it last year for her first marathon, and she loved it!
Once my training starts, I’m going to set my desktop background as the logo for my race. Until then, I’m going to keep the picture of my sister’s Shih-Tzu playing in the snow.

  • Marlene says:

That sounds like just about the PERFECT morning. I was one of the nutters who dragged myself out of bed to run in the sub-zero temps… although it didn’t end up warming up at all during the day anyway, so it didn’t matter much.

    Congrats on your first 20!

  • I’m so impressed that you got outside for the first 12. I went snowshoeing with a friend this morning in (positive) 3 degree temps, and my face and fingers nearly fell off!

  • Marcia says:

Very nicely done—way better than the Bears, I might add (sniff).

  • Great job on the 20!!!

So happy to hear that you are not having any knee troubles and that your partner was able to join you. THat would be lots of fun ..
I have a 20 miler this weekend and I hope the weather will be like it is today. We are having a fake early spring. IT was 60F yesterday!

I LOVE reading about your training!! It’s coming so SOON now! Maybe I should put the boston screen up too, lol

  • GREAT JOB!!! 20 miles!! So glad you started your day with breakfast in bed instead of FREEZING outside!!

    BOSTON!! You’re my hero!!

  • Keri says:

Nice! Way to get in your 20 even though it was FREEZING outside! 1 down! 3 to go!

  • Joanne says:

I love how your broke your run into 10 great miles chatting with a friend, then 2, then finishing it all up while watching the game. Good for you! What a great way to spend the day.
*Wish my hubby would bring me breakfast in bed but usually I’m up before him. I’ll stay in bed next weekend, just to see what happens :)

  • Lauren says:

Yay!! Congratulations on an awesome run!! Getting that first 20-miler out of the way always feels so good. And I always love doing more than one, because I feel like each time you finish 20 miles, your confidence goes up that much more (side note: I love that you said you “get to do” 3 more — amazing attitude :) ). Despite those last few miles being tough (and let’s be honest…they sort of always are), it sounds like you handled it really well!! I’m glad you’re not feeling sore at all today. You are definitely my inspiration for getting through mine this weekend!

  • Ashley says:

Congrats!! Your breakfast looks soo yummy! And I feel your hubby’s pain all the way with that loss, one of the most boring games ever and it was just painful to even watch. Maybe next year?

  • JazzyTami says:

Wow 20 miles! That’s awesome! I hope you celebrate thats an accomplishment! An ice bath sounds more painful than the run!. 1Day Sale nets 10 new people for small-town America! We’ll take it!

  • Jenn says:

The Bears/Pack game was just a no win situation for a Vikings fan…

Congrats on the 20! Always a great feeling to have that under your belt. Awesome that the weather cooperated for you! Fun to have a partner for some of it too!

Laughing at the sweaty towels. I can’t even soak up the sweat on me with a dry towel after awhile. It’s just GROSS.

Glad your legs are feeling good today:)

  • Nicole says:

way to go on that run lady! i could barely make it 4 miles let alone 20! your my hero! wooo boston!

  • heather says:

Nice job piecing the run together! I’m impressed with the ice bath – I can do it in the summer, but just can’t bring myself to do it in the winter. :)

  • Anna says:

Great job getting it done! those pancakes look TASTY and your plates are purty =)

  • Erika says:

those pancakes look pretty amazing…and way to go on your 20! that’s sweet! I finally found a jazzercise class here in jackson and i can’t wait to check it out! we need a date soon so i can catch up…living without the internet is the PITS!

  • brrrr, Good for you for getting out there. Remind me where exactly you live again? Love the start to this day!

  • Morgan says:

Don’t ya just love how fast the miles fly by with company?!?!? Seriously! Great job getting out there for 10!

  • Jess says:

Yeah, so I totally feel bad about complaining about running my 20 in the rain. Ewww so cold! I can’t lounge around before a run like that–gotta get moving or I’m afraid I won’t start!
