my last long run on these familiar roads
Sigh.
I wish that it had gone better…
Yesterday I realized that this is not just my 5th and final 20 miler for this training cycle, it is the last time I will get to do a long run here. Next Saturday we’re looking for housing in our new home town. I’ll be on spring break, which means that we can take our time and look for a place that is going to fit us. We won’t be back here until the next weekend…and that will be 6 days before we leave for Boston. CRAZINESS.
So, yeah. My last long run here. Instead of enjoying it and soaking it all in… all I could think about was how slow I was running and how much my legs hurt. I was shocked that my legs didn’t hold up at all. Sure…I haven’t been running as much lately, so its not necessarily a surprise. At least it shouldn’t have been.
It was 20 degrees when I started, so instead of the “dress rehearsal” I was hoping for, I ended up having to layer on all of my winter running gear: tights, baselayer, fleece jacket, gloves, earwarmers, and neck gaiter. I will admit that I did enjoy the first half of the run. The blue sky. My audiobook. The beautiful country side. I actually warmed up enough to have Mr. Dawn bring me my lighter jacket.
Then I got to the turn around. And discovered that I had been running WITH the wind the entire time. All of a sudden there was a severe headwind. Add to that I was headed right into the hilliest section of the route. It was pretty demoralizing. Luckily Mr. Dawn had agreed to meet me just on the other side of the hills, so I pressed on to the promised land of our rendezvous location. After filling up my water bottle and complaining to him about how brutal the wind was, I set out on my long trek towards home.
I walked. Several times. There was no crying, but there was a lot of moaning in pain. Every so often I had to stop and stretch my legs so that I could keep running.
It’s not the way I wanted my last 20 miler to go down…I really wanted to head into Hopkinton with a great training cycle and all the confidence in the world. I know that Boston is going to be the greatest race I’ll ever run in and I’m having to accept that it’s not going to be my best performance. It’s a tough pill to swallow. Because no matter how many times I say “I’ll just go for the experience,” there is a part of me that wishes I would be in peak condition for this race.
Also, today, I packed my first box for our big move! Go me!!! I’m starting to realize that since we’ll be gone for the next three weekends, then we’ll have guests for the two weekends after that (one of which is Mr. Dawn’s graduation weekend)…there isn’t going to be a lot of time to be wrapping, labeling, and putting into well-marked boxes. So, I’ve got to start. I guess it would be more correct to say I should start HELPING. Cause Mr. Dawn is neck deep into the packing. He’s got almost all of our books organized, separated, cataloged and put into rubbermaids. Cause he’s that awesome.
Me? I’ve packed one box. Its a start…

now, it’s not like i live in florida or anything, but how the hell do you girls do it?? i do not run outdoors more than 3 miles if it’s under 35 degrees. i just don’t have “thick” skin i guess. i was so so proud of myself for doing a 15 miler in 48 degree weather today LOL.
sorry your last run didn’t go as planned, but that doesn’t mean that you aren’t necessarily more ready than you think!
I still cant believe you are moving!!!! ahhhh
sorry your last run in didnt go as planned!
So much going on in life right now. So many BIG things in front of you. Why couldn’t Boston be in September??? I am so sorry things were so tough. But if you can persevere throught the wind and cold solo 20, you can make it on race day with THOUSANDS of other people cheering for you. Don’t look back over your training with any regrets. You made a very reasonable choice with the job and life changes. I admire your ability to prioritize. Give Mr. Dawn a big hug. I can’t wait to see you in person!!! I’ll be in Wave 2, corral 6.
Running into the wind sucks.
I remember how nostalgic I was on my last run in SC before we moved to AK… and I didn’t run there nearly as much as you’ve run your routes! Moving is exciting though!! Except the packing…Howdy did 90% of our packing. I’m whiny and suck at it.
Good luck with Boston and the moving process!!
Seems like this was the weekend for a lot of people to dig deep and learn how to run when we really don’t want to. My run went much the same way.
I had at least three distinct opportunities to pack it in, but I kept going. (Honestly, I can’t believe I didn’t pack it in – the plan was 6 loops – so I had plenty of times to say “enough”)
These runs may not be our “favorite” but they are there to teach us something about ourselves and our running.
Blah, so sorry the run didn’t go as well as planned!
But I think the excitement of being in Boston and all the people cheering for you will get you through that day so hang in there!! Good luck with the packing and moving, too…that is never a fun thing!!!
see you in a few days and then mom and I will be one of the many people with you in BOSTON. My goal is that you at least will hear even If we don’t see each other during the race. ILY
I’m sorry that your 20 miler wasn’t what you wanted it to be. But just keep in mind, you did it! Boston will be so much different. With the crowd and endorphins, you’ll do great!
Sounds like you have a really hectic schedule coming up!! Having just moved I definitely recommend packing a few boxes per night so it’s less overwhelming!!
yuck. headwinds are the worst. i’m sorry this wasn’t what you wanted, but think of all the mental toughness you just gained! plus, race day adrenaline will pump pump you up!!
i hate that your run wasn’t so good…. but maybe you got the bad one out of the way, and boston is gonna rock! (i feel like i’ve missed lots of your posts lately…. how did that happen!?) anywho, sending lots of good vibes your way—>for packing, house-buying, and boston-ing.
My college band director always said that a bad “dress rehearsal” would mean a great performance. He was never wrong in that regard. You will be great and you will rock Boston!
Hang in there with the moving and packing! Will you still be in MI, or are you headed to a new state as well?
I would miss my usual route(s) soooo much if we moved! Sorry that this one didn’t go better for you.
Good luck with the house hunt and packing!
Try not to stress…the good news is you had 4 other killer 20-milers. I wouldn’t worry about one not-so-great one! Maybe the stress of moving will help your race! And I hear you about this weather!
20-milers are often not pleasant for me… familiar road or not! I’ve had to pick up some new running places recently, and although it sucked initially, I think I like the change of scenery. Good luck with everything!
SO LindseyAnn kinda stole what I was going to say ~ you KNOW that bad dress rehearsal translates to great opening night! I know you’ll hear your dad rooting for you, wherever he is along the race route!
No regrets now:) My last long long run before my first marathon-TERRIBLE. My 8 year old joined me for the last 3 miles and I couldn’t remotely keep up with her-I felt so tired. The marathon went AWESOME!
Boston is exhilarating, awesome! People to visit with, people to watch, people to draft off if it’s windy:) Much easier than a solo long run!! Good luck Girl!!
Aw! sorry the run didnt go well!
Thinking of you and wising you the best in Boston@!!!!
Who says that one lousy long run means you won’t have a good Boston race???! Girl, I strongly feel like all the miles and training you’ve put in over the past 4+ months will well over shine a tough 20 miler. You’ve built a base of 4 other 20 milers at this point… you’re legs are made for distance! A nice, 3 week taper is all your legs/body need and you’ll be FLYIN’ down Boylston. YOU GOT THIS. And I totally 110% agree with the sentiment that a bad dress rehearsal means a fabulous opening night
I didn’t mean to post such a short comment earlier! Sorry! I’m so sorry your legs hurt during this run–but I agree with the previous posts–this totally will not tranlate to Boston. zero correlation!
