a new week a new goal

Ok, so it’s Monday.  I’ve decide to set a goal for myself for this week.

I want to run five days in a row.  In the morning.  Outside.  A minimum of 3 miles, hopefully more.

That sounds like nothing, right?  Well…

Seriously?  [deep breath] I believe that if I can find a way to run consistently I will have won the battle.  I need to be OK with slogging through some horrible runs.  I need to just get out and make it happen.  Its a choice, right?  My choice.  And I choose to run.  Or at least I did today.  And I hope to choose it again tomorrow….

Be careful gitl! It is brutal out there.

  • HOLY SMOKIN HEAT!! S@#T!! I would die!!! We are such wimps here in our 60-80 degree temps with cloudy days every other day. Woah!! We don’t even have air conditioning. Good for you for choosing to run anyway!

Sounds like a plan to me.

We’re getting the same heat wave this week. Not going to be fun. :(

I know I need to just slow down, be careful and do what I can – but it’s so frustrating!

oh good grief. that’s what it looks like here too. i’m a little over this weather.

side note: i sometimes will run before sunup with a red blinky light on me so cars don’t smash into me. because it’s THAT hot.

get out the door one step at a time. it SUCKS running in the heat but take walk breaks when necessary and run shorter distances.. works for me! thinking of you!!

  • Wow. And I thought Michigan was hot. How about do your run at 5am. At least it won’t be 100 at that time(probably only 90) haha!

  • Keri says:

Ughh I know. Its been so hot. Hang in there…it will get easier!

  • Ashley says:

Ahhh that looks miserable! I mean its the same here in Chicago but I feel your pain. Good luck with your goal~!

  • 103? Ouch…

We were in Miami for the weekend visiting family and I nearly died running on the boardwalk in the late morning sun. Be careful out there.

Kudos to you. I am a heat weenie so am in awe of your determination. Good luck! Freeze your water bottle, maybe?

  • mm says:

ugh. good luck!! I can’t run if it’s over 80* or I always end up with a migraine. :(

  • sweetlord that is offensive how hot it is there. get those 5 days of running in! yes yes yes you can do it! (so sorry to hear about the good ol’ Garmin!)

Hey there, yep we have the same weather here! It is tough to stay motivated……so I have decided that it is time for a new running goal. Your history is so much like mine! I ran Grand Rapids in 09 as my first, then 6 months later ran traverse city and shaved off 14 minutes to qualify for Boston, then ran Boston this past April as my third. And I ran it 22 minutes slower than my qualifier (due more to an unhealed injury and using common sense) but as a result, was able to have a completely different marathon experience…..high fiving loads of kids, accepting orange slices, licorice, crowd water……smiling at people and responding to comments……I noticed WAY more than I ever would have otherwise (running for a good time).

But now I realize how much time, mental focus and effort that went towards the accomplishment of that goal and I realize that it is kind of like a closed chapter……I need to start something new that has the same type of internal draw that the goal of the BQ and running it had…….they say that most marathoners are slow twitch folks and that by improving the 5k time significantly, the marathon pace gets a piggy back boost……not sure if you like shorter races or not, but I am building my aerobic base using the Hadd formula (maybe to 40 mpw or so, we will see) and then intend to shave my 5k down from 24:00 to 21:30 ! That’s a lot….I know……..but the goal has to be big for me to stay focused on it ! And the side benefit would be all the available 5k races in the area, lower race expenses, and less training time ( after etablishing a base anyway). Once I have achieved this, back to marathon training I go to try and run a time that will guarantee automatic entry to the NY marathon (another cool goal).

I, too, am in the process of changing careers, so having a distant goal is a wiser financial move for me at present, so it works out perfectly ! Basically setting a few small, but tough, goals that build on each other leading to something HUGE. I need to have structure to stay focused, I guess…….sorry this was so long ! Guess I better get to work on that new job stuff ! LOL

    Good luck to you!
